Trout Lily
Trout Lily 4-26-08Over the past few years I had seen the single leaf version of this plant (left leaf of photo above) in scattered locations. They were almost always growing in the same areas as the returning Red Trillium and other shady woods plants. At one point I even thought they were another type of Trillium.
As you can see from the photo this year one of them bloomed in its 2-leaf form motivating me to pull out my Dick Young plant bible, Kane County Wild Plants & Natural Areas to ID it.
Mr. Young describes the Trout Lily as a plant common in fine woods. He continues:
"...It is a choice April wildflower, a captivating little bell springing from a pair of pale green and rusty, variegated leaves from which it derives another of its common names of Adder's Tongue. Sterile, one-leave plants abound and are said to take 7 years to bloom, when they then send out 2 leaves."Cool.

Dem house divided
My bumper these days confuses people. I suppose the messages are that we have a divided household, that "either or both" will work (we'll vote for whoever the Dem candidate is) and a reminder that we still have two good candidates while the GOP has none.
As a side note - I know my license plate holder is wishful thinking during the Unaccountable Dauphin's reign, but it has received lots of good laughs and scowls over the years (on my cars since early 2003). Maybe somebody will Pinochet them some day while they are traveling abroad. Hope springs eternal...
